What is a floor mounted door stop?

A floor mounted door stop is a fitting secured to the floor to limit how far a door can open. It helps prevent the door or handle from damaging walls, furniture and nearby fittings.

When should I use a floor mounted door stop instead of a wall-mounted one?

Choose a floor stop when there is no suitable wall behind the door, the wall cannot accept a secure fixing or the door is particularly heavy. Floor-mounted stops are also useful in open-plan areas and where the door needs to stop before reaching nearby furniture.

Can floor mounted door stops be fitted to every type of flooring?

Floor stops can be fitted to many timber, tile, laminate and concrete floors, but compatibility depends on the product, floor construction and fixings. Check for underfloor heating and hidden services before drilling, and use fixings designed for the specific substrate.

Where should a floor door stop be positioned?

Position it where the door is stopped before the handle or door reaches the wall or furniture. It should contact a strong area of the door, sit far enough from the hinges to reduce leverage and remain clear of normal walking routes where possible.

How do I install a floor mounted door stop?

Mark the required stopping position, check for hidden services and drill using the correct bit for the floor material. Secure the stop with suitable fixings and test the door carefully. Follow the individual product instructions because fitting methods can differ.

Will a floor door stop damage the flooring?

A mechanically fixed floor stop requires holes in the floor or subfloor. When the correct tools and fixings are used, installation damage can be minimised, but extra care is required with tile, stone, laminate and floors containing underfloor heating. Check whether a non-drill product is available if penetrating the floor is unsuitable.
