What is a deadlock?

A door deadlock secures a door by projecting a solid bolt into the frame. The bolt does not retract simply by pushing the door closed, which distinguishes a deadlock from a standard latch. In UK ironmongery, the term commonly includes mortice deadlocks fitted within the door edge, although shoppers may also use “deadbolt” or “dead bolt lock” when looking for the same locking function.

Deadlocks can be used as the main keyed lock or as an additional security measure, depending on the door, product specification and installation. They are commonly fitted to timber front and back doors, side entrances, offices and storage rooms.

Choosing the right deadbolt lock

Door type: confirm that the lock is suitable for timber, composite or metal construction.

Case size and backset: match the measurements to the existing cut-out or the planned handle and key position.

Security rating: for external doors, check the product documentation and any insurer requirements. Select a BS 3621-rated lock where that standard is required; do not assume every 5-lever lock carries the same certification.

Door thickness and handing: verify compatibility before ordering, particularly for replacement work.

Finish: coordinate the visible forend and key furniture with the rest of the door hardware.

Application: decide whether you need a mortice deadlock, euro-profile option or another deadbolt configuration.

Deadlocks for front doors

A front door deadbolt must suit the door construction and the wider locking setup. It may be used with a night latch or other compatible hardware to create layered security. Correct fitting is essential: the bolt should engage fully with a securely fixed keep, and the door and frame must be in sound condition.

For an insurance-sensitive or fire-door application, confirm the required certification and installation method before purchase. If you are replacing an existing lock, using the same case dimensions can reduce alteration work, but security and compatibility should take priority.

Deadlock FAQs

What is the difference between a deadlock and a latch?

A latch uses a sprung bolt that retracts when the handle is operated. A deadlock uses a locking bolt operated by a key or locking mechanism and does not normally include a sprung latch bolt.

Is a deadbolt lock suitable for a front door?

It can be, provided the lock is compatible with the door and meets the security requirements for the property. Check the product certification and any insurance conditions rather than relying on the number of levers alone.

What do 2.5-inch and 3-inch deadlock sizes mean?

These usually describe the depth of the lock case. The backset - the distance from the door edge to the keyhole centre—also changes, so compare both measurements with the existing door preparation.

Should a deadlock be professionally fitted?

Professional fitting is recommended if the door needs new morticing, is a fire door, or must meet a particular security or insurance standard. Accurate alignment between the lock, bolt and keep is essential.
